Crichton Castle

Crichton Castle is located at the village of Crichton two miles south of Pathhead, near Edinburgh.

It was originally built as a tower house family residence in the late 14th Century by John De Crichton. Following an attack by John Forrester of Corstorphine, John De Crichton’s son William reconstructed the castle. He also built the nearby Crichton church. Some say that John De William’s ghost haunts the castle site.

Mary Queen of Scots is reputed to have spent a few nights at the castle to attend a wedding in 1562.

In 1956 the owner, Major Henry Callander passed the castle into state care.

Crichton Castle was used as a location in the 1995 film Rob Roy, starring Liam Neeson.

Our photograph shows the castle building in the background. In the foreground is a building which may have been a chapel, stable block or slaughter house.
